How to Format & Write a Cover Letter
Apart from a well-composed resume a finely tuned cover letter can help to stand out among the rest of job seekers. Be sure to tailor each cover letter to the specific position for which you are applying. While there is a formula you should follow when writing a cover letter, don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through as well.
Here we have included some instructions for writing a good cover letter.
Instructions
Step 1
Type the date of your application at the top of your letter, followed by the name and address of the employer. If there is a specific person listed who will review your application, include that person’s name as well.
Step 2
Address your prospective boss formally. Use a formal introduction. If you know the name of the person looking at your application, write “Dear Mr./Ms. _____” at the beginning of your letter. If you do not have a specific name, use “Dear Sir or Madam” or “To Whom it May Concern.”
Step 3
In the first paragraph, clearly State the exact position for which you are applying. You can mention the source form where you heard about the position, e.g. a personal connection or newspaper. Include a reason why you feel you are right for the job. For example, “I am an excellent art director with 12 years of experience.”
Step 4
Support your statement from the first paragraph with facts about your experience and training. Carefully include any achievements or responsibilities you have earned in other jobs. It’s helpful to reread the list of requirements in the job listing and then include examples to show you possess these qualities.
Step 5
You should confidently sum up your credentials for the job for your conclusion paragraph. Avoid terms like “I hope you will consider me” or “I think I would be right for the job.” Opt for a more decisive and positive tone with “Thank you for your consideration” and “I am confident I would be an excellent addition to your team.”
Step 6
End your letter with a complimentary close, such as “Sincerely,” a few lines down from the body of your letter. Type your name four lines down from the close, and sign your name in blue or black ink in the space between the close and your typed name.
