Finding a new job is a very hectic task. Once you accomplish this task you feel very relaxed and stress free. It certainly feels like all your dreams have suddenly come true. You start assuming that your responsibilities towards your current job have ended.

This assumption of yours is however wrong because its important for an individual to resign from the job on a good note rather than on a bad one. Therefore, before resigning from your present job you should feel responsible to complete the duties that have been already assigned to you.

After you have completed all your due assignments, you then prepare your resignation letter. But before this you also need to ensure that you have signed a formal agreement regarding the job start date with your new boss. Otherwise you will not only be insulted in your own eyes but also incur the risk of losing your current job.

Hence, a smooth exit is as important as a smart start. Few points concerning a smooth departure are mentioned below:

  • Inform your supervisor first about your new job offer before he gets to know from some other colleague of yours.
  • Make sure that you resign following all the organizational policies and procedures for example every organization requires a 2 week or a month notice before which an employee cannot leave.
  • Don’t show off about your new job and avoid discussing it too much with your co-workers.
  • Try not to offend anyone no matter how you feel about that person. Make them feel their value in your life.
  • Complete the projects in progress that have been assigned to you earlier.
  • Leave on a good note by maintaining good professional relationships with co-workers.
  • Before leaving analyze the employee manual to identify the benefits and compensation you deserve as a reward for your hard work.
  • Arrange files and work related stuff in a manner that your co-worker or a new employee hired in your place does not face any difficulty.
  • Guide your replacement regarding all the job and work responsibilities that you use to perform.
  • Don’t take any office possessions along with you.

Various companies conduct an exit interview with the departure employee. The purpose of this interview is to get the feedback about the company’s working environment and an insight on the reason for resigning.

Logically, you should respond to such queries sincerely and naturally. However, if you’re planning an easy exit, respond to such queries in a positive manner. Suggest them the ways that can improve their current working environment. Avoid responding to un-professional questions rather give professional opinions.

You should always prevent you’re position in your current organization because you never know you may not be satisfied with your new and may want to switch back to the old one. Therefore, you should leave such an impression that they are willing to hire you back whenever you want.

For a smooth exit, prepare yourself in advance so that you don’t chaos during the interview. Following questions might help you prepare yourself for an exit interview:

1. Reasons that have led you to decide to resign?

2. What do you like about your new job?

3. Feedback regarding the organization management.

4. Feedback on how to improve the organizational structure?

5. Your likes and dislikes about the company?

Hope these tips will help you as you move forward in your career in the future.
