Some people really know what they want and chose the job of their interest easily. But, for some of us it’s not that easy.

Self-Assessment

A self-assessment can help you to find the appropriate area of interest. For example, some people prefer to work either with ideas, people or things. The task is discovering your preferred area.

Here’s a self-assessment exercise to help you get started. Go through the following descriptions, and as you read, think about which one sound most like you.

Ideas

You have a curious and independent nature and are generally interested in exploring new ideas by using your creativity. People who focus on ideas may enjoy the analytic challenges of fields such as science or medicine, or artistic fields such as writing or interior design. Although these careers are different in many aspects, all of these careers require curiosity and creativity.

People

You have a social, friendly nature and like using your communication skills to guide and help others. This category of people often find satisfaction in helping occupations such as counseling, coaching or teaching, or in more persuasive professions such as politics or sales. Every profession that offers the opportunity to influence and guide others may be interesting to these persons

Things (includes Data)

People who are orderly, practical and persistent enjoy working with their hands and prefer some clearly defined tasks. People who prefer to focus on things may be happy working in a hands-on environment like mechanics or farming or computers, or using their math abilities as a bookkeeper, financial analyst or banker. These careers offer much control and generally do not require much interaction with others.

It is common for most of us to fit into more than one category. Many jobs are suited to those who have a less clearly defined preference. For example, chefs are creative people who have a very hands-on job. Same is the case with landscape architects.

Whatever job you go for, make sure you are satisfied by it and enjoy it thoroughly as only this will keep you motivated and going, day after day.
