Although feelings are great and you should not try to push them deep down where they can aggravate. But the way you manage your emotions at work, including all feelings of anger, jealousy, feeling slighted, feeling misunderstood, feeling under-appreciated, resentment, hopelessness, insecurity, fear, anxiety, isolated, feeling powerless, etc., can count up to make all the difference to your career and daily work life.

Putting Emotional Intelligence to Work for You

We all feel some of these feelings at one time or another; but the trick is how do you handle your own reactions in the workplace? The way you consciously and intentionally manage those feelings can make your work life smoother and brighter.

Here are a few tips you to help you control your emotions and to guide you so that you can put some emotional intelligence into work:

1. Don’t Give Up your Power!

It is common for everyone to feel powerless at some time or another, especially in the workplace. It’s important to remember that you are not alone in this. And no matter what the situation is, you also have choices, even if your choice is to stay and do what’s being asked of you for whatever reason. When you believe that you do have a choice, you get a feeling of powerfulness.

On the other hand, when you feel trapped, your power shrinks and so does your ability to see solutions right before your eyes. Instead of feeling like a victim, start to think about ways to use your power in order to get yourself into a better situation, either with your current company or elsewhere. But you won’t be able to get anywhere if you feel powerless to change your own fate.

2. Build Strong Relationships at Work

Try to build a strong support network from the first day you begin a job. This can shape your entire work experience and career. Slowly, with the passage of time, these alliances will help you to help you move ahead, and support you to accomplish every day assignments.

Be helpful and supportive in order to build good relationships. Some people may resist your attempts, but don’t let that bother you.

Avoid office gossip or complaints, and try to build sound relationships.  This will help you in the long run and you never know which of those people might get you jobs in the future.

3. Your Attitude at Work

Your attitude depends on your perspective. If you come to work with a sour attitude, or always see the others as wrong and yourself as right, you will be the one who loses out. No one would want to work with you, which will make you feel worse. Always have a positive attitude and you will enjoy your work too.

4. When Emotions hold you Prisoner

Sometimes, you may find yourself getting caught up in a rush of anger or frustration. Instead of complaining and losing your perspective, you should strive harder to prove yourself and this will enable you to progress and forget about your anger.

5. Beware the Blame Game

You play the blame game, when you point your finger at everyone and everything except yourself, and blame everyone else for your misfortunes. You tend to lose precious time and perspective that could be helping you create a more enjoyable job experience, when you get caught up in emotions or useless behaviors. A positive attitude will attract more people towards you and will help you to build good relations with them, enabling you to gain support and work more efficiently.

6. Being Right just Doesn’t Matter

Being right does feel great, but you will only be wasting your time, if you spend your whole day telling others that you are right, diverting yourself from getting ahead.

Prove yourself not by being right all the time, but by helping to get things done and problems solved. It is not important to be right always, but it is important to be helpful and effective to be appreciated.

7. Seeing Possibility

By seeing above the anger and hurt affecting our work lives, we get to see the real opportunities that may come our way. Possibility surrounds us in every way, we just have to learn  how to look for it.
