3 Steps to Jumpstart a Career Change

People change their career directions for a number of reasons. Most of the people change their career paths complaining that they dislike their boss, and are not appreciated or rewarded for their performance accordingly. Some are simply bored with their career, or have no room for advancement.

However, when deciding about a career change, it is important to always step back and look at where you are right now and how you got there. By looking back and analyzing your current situation and the career path you have followed, you can make good career decisions in the future.

Start Off By Asking Yourself these Questions

The best way to start off is by asking yourself these three questions:

1.  How did you choose your career field? (Looking for motivators/decision making style)

2.  What do you like about it? (Looking for values)

3. What would you change if you could change something about your current career? (Considering the problem solving style and values and possibly skills)

It is important to conduct a thorough career assessment in making good career decisions. However, many successful people say that they ‘just fell into’ their careers. But if you look at their career paths closely, you will see that they had actually positioned themselves to be in the right place at the right time.

This means that they typically had a good idea about their values and the types of things that motivated them. So as soon as an opportunity came around, they pursued it. You may call it ‘following your passion’ or simply ‘dumb luck’, but either way, it is vital to know what is important to you and what price you will pay to get what you want.
