How to Layoff an Employee
Laying someone off is perhaps the most dirty of all hats an HR Manager has to wear. But hire and fire people is what we do and here are some of the tips I have compiled for you to make this easy for you so next time you know how to fire someone. Its part of your job to make it less painful for employee being laid off.

- Make it Predictable
- Provide a detailed explanation
- Give Choices / Options (Involve them)
- Show Compassion
Making it Predictable
Secrecy only brings trouble and unrest. Announce before hand that there are going to be layoffs and let people be mentally prepared for this.
Explaining in detail
Make sure that you have a reasonable explanation of your action. It is very rude to fire people with out telling them why. Providing a detailed explanation helps the employee being terminated cope with the situation well. (Never enter into an argument)
Involving Them in Decision
Sounds absurd but involving the employee you are going to layoff in the process empowers them and let them control the emotions. Give them a package with options so to divert their thinking process. i.e choice of an extended health insurance or cash upfront. this helps in reducing the anxiety.
Showing Compassion
Act like a human. show compassion. A soft word may go a long way. De-personalize the whole thing and you might not need to call security.
Also before laying off someone make sure that the only choice you have in a given situation. There is nothing worse than to lay off people to “save money”. An employee is worth far more than the money you save…
That’s it for today…
